Inspired by Thomas Frank's new book What's the Matter With Kansas, I took a trip there to go find out. I stuck primarily sites listed in the book. The main destinations were:

The opulent Kansas City suburbs of Mission Hills and Overland Park

The turn of the century boomtown Emporia

Wichita and its Boeing complex

The Totem Poles of Mullinville. A sculpture set up by a contemporary rabid conservative, M.T. Ligget

The slaughterhouses and feedlots in the west Kansas towns: Liberal, Garden City, and Dodge City.

The Garden of Eden. A scuplture garden by turn of the last century populist J.P Dinsmoor.

The Cathedral of the Plains, built 100 years ago by Volga German immigrants.

The Beecher Bible and Rifle Church, founded by Abolitionist settlers funded and armed by the Yale faculty.

The Saint Mary's Academy and College, supported by a traditional Latin mass sect.

Downtown Kansas City, KS.

Random highways and general scenery.
